What Is Oily Fish?
The fish which are often describe as “oily fish†are the following:
- Trout
- Sardines
- Salmon
- Pilchards
- Mackerel
- Herrings
They are called “oily fish†because their flesh contains the beneficial omega-3 oils.
Omega-3 fish oils are well known for their beneficial health properties.
This is because omega-3 fish oil is rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs).
EFAs contain of beneficial health properties that can help to reduce the symptoms of the following health conditions:
- Ulcerative Colitis
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Psoriasis
- Crohn’s Disease
- Asthma
Apart from these health conditions, omega-3 fish oils and essential fatty acids are a good lower back pain treatment.
Why Are Oily Fish A Good Lower Back Pain Treatment?
As previously mentioned, oily fish contain omega-3 fish oil and essential fatty acids.
Essential fatty acids aid in the production of the hormone-like substances called prostaglandins.
Prostaglandins help to reduce inflammation and pain within the joints.
Oily fish also contains niacin and vitamin D which are both essential for maintaining healthy bones and nerves, plus they also help your body to absorb calcium.
How Much Oily Fish Do You Need To Take As A Lower Back Pain Treatment?
Many dieticians and nutritionist recommend that you should be eating at least 100g of oily fish a couple of times per week.
Unfortunately, some people do not like the taste of oily fish.
If you are one of those people who do not like the taste of fish, there is good news; you can buy omega-3 fish oil in supplement form from your local health store.

Why would you say that prostaglandins reduce inflammation and pain in the joints? They have the exact OPPOSITE effect!

Cheryl, you are partly correct…
You can get both anti and pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
The EFAs in omega-3 fish oil helps your body to produce anti-inflammatory prostaglandins.
Bad fats help your body to produce pro-inflammatory prostaglandins.
