Stress

In this post I am going to discuss whether tyrosine is a natural remedy for stress.

You will discover what tyrosine is, how it can help your stress and how much you need to take to help with your stress.

What Is Tyrosine?

Tyrosine or l-tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid.

It is manly found within protein foods such as dairy, meat and fish, but your body can also produce tyrosine from another amino acid called phenylalanine.

Your body uses tyrosine to produce neurotransmitters and adrenal stress hormones.

How Can Tyrosine Help With Your Stress?

Research with animals showed that the brain levels of adrenal stress hormones and neurotransmitters were reduced when the animals were stressed.

When these animals were given tyrosine supplements, this reduction was reversed and a performance improvement was noted.

Double-blind trials with humans have resulted in similar results especially concerning mental performance whilst under stress.

How Much Tyrosine Do You Need To Take To Help With Your Stress

The recommended dose of tyrosine is between 500mg and 1 g, two or three times per day before a meal for up to three weeks.

The dose taken in the previously mentioned double-blind human trials was 150 mg of tyrosine for every 2.2 pounds of body weight.

Tyrosine is best taken with vitamin C and B complex vitamin supplements.

Are There Any Side Effects Of Taking Tyrosine For Stress?

As with all supplements, please consult your doctor before taking tyrosine.

Long term use of tyrosine in large doses (over 1000 mg per day) should be monitored by your doctor.

Although there has not been any report of serious side effects whilst taking tyrosine, it has been noted that it can cause anxiety and insomnia.

Note: If you have hypertension or taking anti-depressant drugs or have a history of schizophrenia or have suffered from malignant melanoma, do not take tyrosine. It could make these conditions worst.

So, to sum up…

Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid.

Double-blind trials both in animals and humans have shown that it can improve mental performance whilst under stress.

Generally, tyrosine is safe to take for short periods of time.
