7 August 2008 – 7:57 pm
Raspberries (Rubus Idaeus) have been used as a food source since prehistoric times; they are native to eastern Asia and are a member of the rose family.
Raspberry fruit comes from the raspberry bush, they are known as “aggregate fruits” and are pink/red in colour with a sweet taste.
Raspberries are bursting with beneficial health nutrients; they contain phytonutrients such as ellagic acid, quercetin, kaempferol, cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside.
These phytonutrients give raspberries antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-carcinogenic properties.
These phytonutrients in combination with other antioxidant within raspberries such as vitamin C makes raspberries an excellent fruit to eat to protect against and reduce the symptoms of conditions such as cancer and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD).
