Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a common chronic inflammatory bowel disease where the lining of the bowel becomes inflamed and ulcerated. It typically affects women rather than men and is common in the 20 to 40 age group. The symptoms of ulcerative colitis (UC) are abdominal pain and bloody diarrhoea sometimes with mucus and pus; other common symptoms are a fever, a feeling of nausea, a loss of appetite, feeling fatigued and weight loss. Doctors are unclear about the exact cause of ulcerative colitis (UC) but some theories suggest abnormal immune function, hereditary and poor blood flow to the bowel.

Changing the diet can help with ulcerative colitis (UC), avoid allergic foods such as dairy and wheat and keeping to a gluten free diet can help. Other foods to avoid are sugar, animal fats, margarine, yeast products and fast food.

Good supplements to take are fish oil, psyllium husks, probiotics, folic acid, evening primrose oil, aloe vera, colloidal silicol gel and boswellia resin.
